'Idol' results: Did someone leave, or was eight enough?

"American Idol XIII," Top 8: Clockwise L-R: Caleb Johnson, Sam Woolf, Jessica Meuse, Dexter Roberts, Alex Preston, C. J. Harris, Jena Irene and Malaya Watson.

"We could get some drama tonight," Ryan Seacrest said at the start of the show, noting that the judges' save remained in play.

Randy Jackson predicted Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, Dexter Roberts and Jena Irene wouldn't have to worry about needing the save, though he thought all eight singers had solid performances. "I'm really massively proud of them," he said.

He was right about Roberts and Irene. Once Seacrest started using the big screen at the back of the stage to show which singers were safe, they were the first two allowed to breathe easy.

Chris Daughtry, one of Jackson's mentors earlier in the season, returned to perform the Daughtry single Waiting for Superman.

After Daughtry's performance, Seacrest returned to the screen to move Johnson into the safe zone, then Meuse, meaning Jackson batted a thousand with his prediction. Alex Preston also stayed alive.

With all the strong performances Wednesday, the Bottom Three should indicate which singers haven't managed to cobble together fan bases. Those turned out to be Malaya Watson, Sam Woolf and C.J. Harris.

Maybe Woolf isn't as popular with the young girls as Idol would have us believe, because he's the one that winds up singing David Gray's Babylon in hopes of sticking around.

It must have worked.

"We are unanimous," Jennifer Lopez says. "We're going to use the save tonight."

Confetti falls. Woolf lives to sing an '80s tune and wind up in the Bottom Three again next week. Unless his fans turn out the vote.
