Mo Pop lineup revealed: Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend to lead 2019 fest in Detroit
Tame Impala, the much-loved Australian psychedelic rock project led by newfound pop hitmaker Kevin Parker, will headline the 2019 edition of Detroit’s Mo Pop Festival, organizers announced Tuesday morning.
Vampire Weekend, the New York indie band that's back in action after several years on hiatus, is also aboard as a headliner for the two-day boutique fest.
Mo Pop will run July 27-28 at West Riverfront Park, its fifth year in downtown Detroit. Tickets are $109.50 (two-day passes) and $75 (single-day) and go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mo Pop website. Four-packs and hotel packages will go on sale Friday, and passes can be purchased minus service charges at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
Tame Impala, which has a new album on the way and is headlining the Coachella fest in April, is making its first Detroit appearance in four years.
Mo Pop’s 22-act mix of indie rock, hip-hop and alternative R&B will include young English singer Ella Mai, fresh off her first Grammy win, along with breakout neo-soul artist Kali Uchis, New York singer-songwriter King Princess and Detroit-born, Houston-raised rapper Lizzo.
Local performers Siena Liggins, Craig Brown Band, the Messenger Birds and the Doozers round out the bill.
Mo Pop 2019 will feature the standard array of local restaurant offerings, food trucks, crafts and vintage video games, along with a second year for the Haute to Death dance party.
Mo Pop started at Sterling Heights’ Freedom Hill Amphitheatre in 2013 and moved to West Riverfront Park in 2015 as a joint production of AEG Presents and the Crofoot. This year’s festival is solely an AEG-produced event.
As with previous installments, the 2019 Mo Pop lineup features acts all playing the fest for the first time. In its seven years, Mo Pop has featured 140 performers with no repeats, organizers say.
