Patrick Page and Amber Gray are king and queen of the underworld in the Broadway production of Anais Mitchell's "Hadestown."

Also nominated was Eva Noblezada, cast as Eurydice in Mitchell's production that's based on the Greek myth of Orpheus. Noblezada was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.

Andre De Shields and Patrick Page were nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. De Shields is cast as Hermes, the narrator of "Hadestown," while Page is the demonic Hades who runs the bleak factory that gives the production its name.

Amber Gray was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. She portrays Hades' wife, Persephone.

"Hadestown" is also up for awards for scenic design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, choreography and best director, Rachel Chavkin.

Mitchell, a native of Addison County, Vermont, staged "Hadestown" on a shoestring in 2006 performances in the Vermont towns of Barre and Vergennes. A revamped version toured Vermont in 2007.

Mitchell, a singer-songwriter who portrayed Eurydice in the early productions, recorded a "Hadestown" album in 2010 with musicians including Ani DiFranco and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. She brought the musical off-Broadway in 2016 for a production also directed by Chavkin.

Anais Mitchell began her folk opera "Hadestown" in her home state of Vermont in 2006.

The most-recent Tony Award-nominated musical with Vermont ties is "Fun Home," which won the Best Musical prize in 2015. "Fun Home" was based on a graphic novel by Alison Bechdel of Bolton and included in its original cast a young Charlotte actor, Oscar Williams.

The top eight categories were revealed in a live broadcast Tuesday morning on "CBS This Morning." Mitchell tweeted a few minutes after the broadcast one simple message: "Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!"
