The 10 best New Year's TV episodes

Kelly Lawler
USA TODAY

Let's face it guys, New Year's Eve can kind of be the worst sometimes. But fortunately, a night that never goes as well as you want is great fodder for television. If you're planning on avoiding the crowds and expense (but hey, get yourself some champagne), we've got 10 New Year's-themed TV episode for you to binge on.

10. "Resolutions" My So-Called Life season 1 episode 16

Leave it to My So-Called Life to turn an episode about New Year's resolutions into a tearjerker. Angela and friends all make resolutions, and while Angela is able to stop doing Jordan Catalano's homework, Rickie trying to find somewhere he belongs proves to be more difficult, and more heart-wrenching.

9. "One Angry Veronica" Veronica Mars season 2 episode 10

Technically this season two episode covers Christmas through New Year's with Veronica serving on a jury on her Christmas break. But the real emotional heart comes when, on New Year's eve, just before the ball drops, Veronica's best friend Wallace shows up at her door, and we know that at least some things will be good in the New Year.

8. "New Year's Eve" Louie season 3 episode 13

If you're interested in a darker (but still pretty darn funny) take on the New  Year follow Louie as he journeys to China.

7. "The Good News" Mad Men season 4 episode 3

Oh poor, poor Anna. After Don finds out about his one true friend's illness he cancels his tropical vacation and heads back to New York, where he rings in the new year with the also-sad Lane. Their method of partying may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can tell it's one of the rare moments Lane finds happiness in New York.

6. "Ultimatum" The Office season 7 episode 12

Remember when Pam tried to get everyone to follow through on their New Year's resolutions? Yeah, that didn't work. Although we commend Creed on his choice of resolution. (Cartwheels are super hard, okay?)

5. "That '70s Finale" That '70s Show season 8 episode 22

That '70s Show ended the same way the 70s did: On December 31, 1979. The long-running show bowed out in a New Year's episode where the gang gathers in Eric's basement for one last smoke before the 80s changed everything.

4. "The One with All the Resolutions" Friends season 5 episode 11

We have three words to describe why we love this episode: Ross's leather pants. The scene where he can't get them back on is one of the funniest the show ever did. This episode also has the bonus of being the one where Rachel finds out about Monica and Chandler.

3. "The Countdown" The O.C. season 1 episode 14

Now that is how you end a year. In the show's most memorable moment, Ryan races to tell Marissa that he loves her before the year is over. To the tune of Dice, they kiss and it's absolutely glorious.

2. "The Limo" How I Met Your Mother season 1 episode 11

Recognizing that New Year's eve is kind of the worst, Ted rents a limo to try to keep the gang together and happy during the holiday. Of course things do not go as planned -- primarily when a fake Moby pulls a gun in the limo -- but it's HIMYM so the episode ends on a sappy note. And hey, we're sold.

1. "The One with the Routine" Friends season 6 episode 10

In its 10-year run, Friends aired more than its fair share of holiday episodes, and New Year's was no exception. And while "The One with all the Resolutions" is great, it's Monica and Ross's dance routine at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve that really puts this episode above and beyond.
