Lilly Wachowski's coincidental coming-out story is like one of her movies

"Ta-da!" said Lilly Wachowski as she accepted a GLAAD Media Award to a standing ovation.

Wachowski made her first public appearance Saturday since preemptively outing herself as a transgender woman. She talked about the story of her coming out, which is just serendipitous and interconnected as many of her film scripts.

"Tonight is a culmination of confluent events for me. This was something I became aware of shortly after receiving my invitation to tonight's affair. A sudden synchronism of time-space that included the 20-year anniversary of Bound, the trans day of visibility, National Women's Day and Pi Day, all occurring within a month's time concurrent with my own coming out, with the help of the fabulous people at GLAAD," she said, adding sarcastically, "as well as the extremely sensitive and courteous people at the Daily Mail. Thanks, guys!"

Wachowski, who was being honored for Netflix show Sense8, makes movies and shows with her sister, Lana, who's also transgender.

"There's a critical eye being cast back on Lana's and my work through the lens of our trans-ness. This is a cool thing, because it's an excellent reminder that art is never static... the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love."
