'Veep's' ex-president exhorts Millennials to vote

Fictional TV presidents worry about voter turnout, too.

Real-life presidential aspirants and their supporters have been encouraging people to vote. Now, a fictional former president, Veep's Selina Meyer, is making her voice heard.

In a short video released Friday, Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in character as Meyer, explains the importance of voting in terms of her fictional presidential defeat. The fifth season of HBO's Emmy-winning comedy looked at events that followed an Electoral College tie, with President Meyer ultimately losing the White House.

From her desk in Veep's Oval Office, Louis-Dreyfus's Meyer urges young people to vote in Tuesday's election.

"Former President Selina Meyer here with a message for Millennial voters: Apparently, the reason I lost the election was that young people didn't turn out to vote."

At this point, ubiquitous aide Gary (Tony Hale) interrupts, saying the weather didn't help, either. "It was cold on Election Day."

"Well, that's true," Meyer says, continuing. "So, the two reasons I lost: weather, which we can't control, and Millennial apathy, which you can. When you don't vote, you're giving your power to someone else, some probably less informed and more motivated. So, please vote, this matters."

In the video, Meyer doesn't pick a side in Tuesday's upcoming election. However, in a different get-out-the-Millennial-vote effort, Louis-Dreyfus, appearing as "your parents favorite performer from something called the television," makes clear she supports Hillary Clinton  — and is no fan of Donald Trump — in a video (slightly NSFW, based on language) posted earlier this week by NextGen Climate, a Super PAC focusing on environmental issues and efforts to confront climate change.
