At any number of times in the 2016 race, this election may have felt like Black Mirror, the mind-bending TV show with episodes that, while fictional, often uncomfortably mirror real-life current events.
And as the results have rolled in, showing an unexpected lead for Donald Trump, Black Mirror's official Twitter account reminded viewers that the outcome wasn't a dystopian episode of their show.
Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker acknowledged Black Mirror's prescience in the 2016 race in an interview with USA TODAY. “It’s difficult, but 2016 feels like a festival of dystopia,” he said.
“Who would have thought, at the start of the year, that by this time you’d have far-right populists on the rise in Europe and half of our cultural icons dead? I hope that we are equipped to deal with this as a species.”
