Podcast pick: Investigate 'Hollywood & Crime'

Carly Mallenbaum
USA TODAY

Looking for something new to listen to while you drive to work/go for a walk/wash the dishes? We're here for you. In a weekly series, we're highlighting a podcast, audio personality or specific story worth hearing.

This week's pick: Hollywood & Crime

If hearing about severed body parts doesn't bother you, 'Hollywood & Crime' is a worthy listen. In the show's first season, it's tackling as-yet-unsolved Black Dahlia murder, which took place 70 years ago.

January 15 will mark 70 years since Los Angeles' notorious Black Dahlia murder. Though dozens of people have confessed to committing that crime, the death of young woman Elizabeth Short remains an unsolved mystery.

Want to know more about it? Wondery, which has the new podcast Hollywood & Crime, had a feeling you would.

Why it's ripe for listening

Hollywood & Crime spends its first season not only talking about the Black Dahlia case – a murder story so infamous that it inspired a novel, band and movie – but also on a group of other similar cases few people know about. Warning: If you can't handle hearing about severed body parts, this definitely is not the series for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy debating the details of cold cases, we expect Hollywood & Crime will be your new favorite show.

The stories are told in weekly installments via perfect crime-scene music, host Tracy Pattin and dramatizations of conversations with investigators, suspects and victims. Already, the show is catching on: Its first weekend on iTunes, Hollywood & Crime was the No. 1 podcast.

Memorable line

Pattin opens the show with this disclaimer:

"Hollywood & Crime contains depictions of violence and is not suitable for everyone. Please be advised."
