NYPD officer belts out Backstreet Boys, channels 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' in viral video

Paging Detective Jake Peralta, you've got a new musical rival.

An officer from the NYPD channeled the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" character (played by Andy Samberg) over the weekend when he sang the Backstreet Boys' "I Want it That Way" over a patrol car intercom.

The officer in the driver's seat, identified by NPR and Fox News as Officer Richard Gunther, alternated between belting out the chorus and holding the intercom mic closer to the radio for the Backstreet Boys to sing backup. 

One commenter on Instagram pointed out that "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," a show about fictional NYPD officers, had a similar bit in a cold open: Detective Peralta asked five men in a lineup to sing "I Want it That Way" to help a witness pick out a criminal.

"You forgot to tag @andysamberg ... @nbcbrooklyn99," one user wrote.

"The NYPD absolutely nailed it today," wrote Jordan Haskins, who posted the video to Instagram. "So cool to see the humanity in our law enforcement. A small thing like this can really give you some hope in such uncertain times."
