'Skyfall' reclaims No. 1 during pre-holidays lull

• Lone newcomer 'Playing for Keeps' did $5 million for sixth place.

Hollywood isn't much of a pre-holiday planner.

Studios, saving their biggest films for students on winter break, pretty much took a pass this weekend, opening just one movie and leaving the box office to holdovers.

After five weeks in release, Skyfall, the 23rd film in the James Bond series, reclaimed the No. 1 spot with $11 million, says box office trackers Hollywood.com.

The film, the largest in franchise history, has done $261.6 million.

The cartoon Rise of the Guardians was second, taking $10.5 million and bringing its overall gross to $61.9 million.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 was third with $9.2 million, while Steven Spielberg's Lincoln took fourth with $9.1 million.

Ang Lee's Life of Pi rounded out the top five with $8.3 million.

The only major newcomer of the weekend, the romantic comedy Playing for Keeps, was sixth with $5 million, meeting the low end of expectations.

Final figures are due Monday.

Attendance and revenue remain up about 6% over the same weekend last year, according to Hollywood.com.
