Here's what happened, according to reports from various outlets including the E! News, the Daily News and the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Gene Hackman, 82, and his wife Betsy Arakawa were walking in downtown Santa Fe, N.M. around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday when a homeless man approached them menacingly, according to police.

The man, identified as Bruce Becker, 63, approached the couple as they were leaving a restaurant and called Hackman's wife a vulgar name. Hackman slapped Becker, who then called the police to report what had happened.

Sgt. Andrea Dobyns who said it was "more like a slap than a punch," said no charges were being filed in relation to the Tuesday incident and that statements from both parties led police to believe that Hackman acted in self-defense," adding, "He was afraid that he and his wife were going to be attacked."

When police arrived, there were no visible signs of injury to Becker or to Hackman, a longtime resident of the Santa Fe area.
