Sally Field: 'I'm panicking about Christmas gifts'

Andrea Mandell, USA TODAY
Sally Field is nominated for best supporting actress for 'Lincoln'.

How did Sally Field find out her big Golden Globes nomination news? "The way I find out all the really important things that are going on in the world, and that is my son Sam called me," she says, laughing. "I, of course, was thrilled, but since my category was the first mentioned I was hanging on saying, 'Tell me about everybody else!'"

After finding out that Daniel Day-Lewis, Steven Spielberg, Tommy Lee Jones and the film were all also nominated, "I was like, 'Yay! All right.' So I kind of jumped around the room then."

The role of Mary Todd Lincoln was famously hard-won by Field, who says her Lincoln experience still feels a bit surreal. "I really just am so proud and honored to be a part of the group, and to have had this time in my life," she says. "So I don't know. I think I'm still having a hard time believing I got the role. I'm a little slow on the uptake I guess."

Field plans to celebrate by hitting the stores. "My celebration really is trying to finish my Christmas shopping and packing all of that up and shipping it to L.A.," says the actress. "Really just going over my Christmas lists and realizing that I don't have enough for one grandchild and too much for another. I'm really living the normal life of most everyone now who's saying, how many days 'til Christmas?"

She's putting off thinking about her Globes dress until 2013. "I'm always panicked about that," she says. "I'm not good at doing that, and I'm of the older ilk. So it's just a mystery to me. I mean luckily I do and will have people helping me do that. I'm just sort of choosing not to panic about any of that right now because I'm panicking about Christmas gifts! So I can only do one panicky thing at a time."
