Sunday ratings: 'Revenge' settles in, '666' scary

  • 'Revenge' holds its own in new Sunday slot
  • '666 Park Avenue' ratings slightly scary
  • 'Sunday Night Football' remains king

ABC's Revenge settled into its new time slot with 9.5 million viewers, roughly matching last season's Wednesday debut and Desperate Housewives' final-season Sunday opener, as fall's TV rollout week ended last night.

Ahead of Revenge, at 8 ET/PT, Once Upon a Time (11 million) also performed well, and was the night's top drama. But ratings for the night's only new series, 666 Park Avenue, were spookier with 7 million, down from 11.1 million for the short-lived Pan Am in the time period.

But NBC's Sunday Night Football ruled again, and will likely average about 21 million viewers when final numbers come in Tuesday.

Fox ranked second, thanks to its own late NFL game that spilled over into prime time, and solid performance by veteran 'toon The Simpsons (8 million), which matched last fall's opener. Yet Family Guy (6.5 million) was down 15% from last year's debut, as creator Seth MacFarlane, who was named host of next year's Oscars on Monday, got no bounce from his work on summer movie hit Ted.

Over on CBS, where four minutes of football spilled into prime time and will affect final averages, the 25th season opener of The Amazing Race (9.7 million) will be down slightly from last year, and The Good Wife (9.8 million) took a hit among younger women from new competition with Revenge. At 10, The Mentalist also settled into a new slot with a series-low 10.8 million, well below from its performance on Thursdays last season.

And on cable, Showtime's Dexter returned with 2.4 million viewers, its biggest premiere yet, while the second-season opener of Emmy-winning Homeland averaged a series-high 1.7 million. Both figures are likely to increase substantially when DVR-delayed viewing estimates are available.
