TV tonight: 'The Voice,' 'Mike & Molly,' 'Castle'

Robert Bianco, USA TODAY
'Mike and Molly' meets 'Simon and Simon': Mike (Billy Gardell) fixes up his mom (Rondi Reed) with his boss (Gerald McRaney).
  • 'The Voice' moves to "the knockouts"
  • Gerald McRaney visits 'Mike & Molly'
  • Castle becomes the suspect on 'Castle'

The Voice
NBC, 8 ET/PT

TV's most convoluted talent show is now on to another round, "the knockouts." As with the battle rounds, the coaches are once again pitting two of their own team members against each other (which makes you wonder why they call them "teams" at all), but this time, the contestants don't find out whom they're singing against until they're ready to perform. As with the prior rounds, the judges pick the winners, a judicial emphasis that continues to keep the contestants in the background, and continues to explain why The Voice has yet to create a breakout artist, something the more singer-centered American Idol was able to do its first time at bat.

Mike & Molly
CBS, 9:30 ET/PT

Fans of Rondi Reed's Peggy will be happy to hear she's getting a boyfriend tonight, as Mike is forced to set her up with his boss. Fans of Simon & Simon, Major Dad and Designing Women, to name some prior CBS appearances, will be happy to know that boss is played by Gerald McRaney.

Castle
ABC, 10 ET/PT

No, no, no. Tonight, the team investigates a ritualistic murder and uncovers evidence that makes Castle the prime suspect — which just may be the crime-show genre's most tired, ridiculous plot. Perhaps this unpreviewed episode will be the exception, but in general, we go into these stories assuming the main character didn't do it, and leave them wondering how the other characters could have been idiotic enough to think he did. So here's the new rule: Unless you're actually planning to make your star the murderer, leave the plot in the dumpster where it belongs.
