The mirrorball trophy is looming large, as Season 19 of Dancing With the Stars comes to a close next week.

So who's going to next week's finals? Was injured Alfonso Ribeiro able to stay in the competition? Did Tommy Chong get sent home? And what was up with Julianne Hough and several of the dancers sporting milkmaid braids on their heads?

Here's how it unfolded for the five semifinalists with scores from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli.

Each of the five stars had to perform two different dances to the same song.

Janel Parrish: "We've been working so hard and now the end is in sight," said Janel. The Pretty Little Liars star got double Chmerkovskiy fun this week as Maks came to give a little advice. "Give the people what they want," was what he told Janel and Val. Their paso doble was fiery and forceful. Carrie Ann spoke for all of us when she said, "I wanted more! It was so dynamic and so dramatic." Len said he was concerned about Maks' involvement, joking it would "set them back." But it didn't. Bruno called Janel "an untamed force of nature." Co-host Erin Andrews called it "sick." Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10 = 40

Janel was born on Oahu, Hawaii. "It was wonderful to grow up in paradise," she said. Her parents said she was a ham, singing from a very young age. At age 6, she landed the role of Cossette in Les Miserable and her family moved to Los Angeles. At age 19, she landed Pretty Little Liars. Her Argentine Tango drew mixed reviews from the judges. Carrie Ann said it was a bit "ungraceful." Len called her an "incredible dancer." Bruno said it was an incredibly intimate dance with lifts that took him "to another dimension." Scores: 9, 9, 10, 10 = 38 Total: 78

Bethany Mota: Derek was having trouble coming up with ideas and it was "scary," said Bethany. "We're definitely feeling a lot of pressure." But of course in the ballroom, they were adorable, dancing a snappy samba to The Jackson Five's I Want You Back with two boys fighting over Bethany. Bruno: "Well done!" Carrie Ann said it was "a little underwhelmed." Len said it was "like cotton candy -- light and fluffy but a little sticky." Julianne said they "really nailed it." Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9 = 36

Framed!

Bethany was born in a small town in California and mom Tammy said she was "very shy." She was home-schooled until third grade, when she started public school and was bullied. In 2011 she discovered YouTube and found her voice. Her second dance, a contemporary number, included a picture frame as a prop, which she and shirtless Derek danced through and in, sweetly and perfectly framing their moves. Bruno called it a "modern masterpiece." Carrie Ann said she didn't want to blink. Len said it was "pretty as a picture." Julianne said it was "picture perfect." Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10 = 40 Total: 76

Alfonso Ribeiro: The star said his "back went into full lockup," during rehearsal. "I started to feel incredible pain in my back," he said. He went to a doctor who told him to rest. But that's really all we saw. No official diagnosis. On the ballroom floor, he did a Argentine Tango to One Republic's Love Runs Out. It was obvious he wasn't doing a lot of bending, but that was Witney's job anyway. Said Len: "You. Can. Dance." Julianne called him a "fighter -- and that's what showed tonight." Alfonso was weeping. It was "a little bit" because of pain, he told host Tom Bergeron. Carrie Ann said his posture was incredible because of his injuries. "I'm not a quitter. I'm not going to quit," he said. Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9 = 36

Alfonso was born in Harlem and was always singing and dancing as a kid. He started acting at 8 years old and launched his career with The Tap Dance Kid on Broadway and went on to Silver Spoons with Ricky Schroder. "We were best friends." Wife Angela says Fresh Prince was the "most cherished time" of his career. He powered through his contemporary dance, without doing many bends or lifts, but giving it a lot of emotion. Len loved the drama and passion of the dance. Carrie Ann said it was "ridiculous!" In a good way. Scores: 10, 9, 10, 10 = 39 Total: 75

Sadie Robertson: First dance: The Duck Dynasty teen and Mark Ballas danced a quickstep to Ariana Grande's Problem in a cute and jazzy number that was both modern and classic. Len said it was so fast that if they'd done it on the freeway, "they'd get a speeding ticket." He loved it. Juliane Hough cited the "light" that shines from Sadie. Bruno said it was "really, really wonderful." Scores: 9, 10, 9, 9 = 37

Sadie, Mark and their guitar.

Second dance; Korie and Willie Robertson talked about Sadie being a "great kid" who would get up on the coffee table and preach to them. Mama Kay Robertson said Sadie was "never afraid" to talk about God. Several Duck Dynasty stars and family members weighed in on her. Her Argentine Tango really showed off her long legs, even if it was a little weird that most of the dance included them holding a guitar. Len said she should be in the finals. Julianne liked the use of the guitar. So did Carrie Ann. Scores: 9, 9, 10, 9 = 37 Total: 74

Tommy Chong: "My confidence is sky high! We survived," said Chong in his taped rehearsal package. He and partner Peta Murgatroyd danced a jazz number to Tainted Love for their first dance. It was a little wacky, as usual, with Peta doing most of the actual dancing. Julianne said she has a crush on Tommy. Bruno enjoyed every minute of it. Carrie Ann said Peta is the "MVP of this season." Len praised Tommy's endurance. Scores: 7, 7, 7, 7 = 28

Tommy's words of wisdom: "If you can make people laugh, they can't hurt you. They gotta love you because you're giving them a feeling of joy. That's my secret." He was born in Alberta, Canada, to a Chinese father. "We were poor." When he was four, his mother got tuberculosis and he was sent to an orphanage. At 10, he found out he has musical ability "and that's what changed my life." His wife, Shelby, was 17 when she met him. "It was love at first site." Daughter Rae Dawn Chong said, "Truth is, Tommy Chong was the perfect dad for me. He's taught me perseverance. He's taught me strength." For his second dance: He and Peta danced a rumba in which he was a toymaker bringing a ballerina to life. Julianne said it was "magical." Peta wiped away tears. Carrie Ann said it was "poetry." Len said Tommy is "America's favorite." Scores: 9, 8, 9, 8 = 34 Total: 62

Going to the finals: Alfonso, Janel, Bethany and .... Sadie!

Sent home: Tommy Chong. His parting words: "I just showed that old stoners can perform when they need to."
