Happy New Year, Charlie Brown/ Rudolph's Shiny New Year

ABC, 8 ET/PT

Perhaps because New Year's tends to be an extremely secular and mostly adult holiday, there really aren't many animated specials devoted to the celebration — and no great ones, alas, though children and those who discovered these Charlie Brown and Rudolph spinoffs as children may disagree. Despite the involvement of Charles M. Schulz in this Charlie Brown effort, it comes across as an advertiser-motivated attempt to round out the franchise's holiday circuit, while Rudolph's involvement in New Year's just makes no sense at all. There's no sleigh to guide, Rudolph. Take the day off.

Mike & Molly
CBS, 8:30 ET/PT

Mike & Molly is new tonight, with an episode that finds Mike getting grumpy because Carl has invited Victoria to join them on their guys-only fishing trip. On the plus side, you get to see more of Katy Mixon's enjoyable light-headed and usually housebound Victoria. On the down side, you get a plot that sounds like it was retrieved from a rejected Our Gang short.

Major Crimes
TNT, 9 ET/PT

Tony Denison fans take note. His Andy Flynn takes center stage tonight, as the detective struggles to talk a man off the ledge of a bridge, only to discover he might rather the man jumped. Recurring guest star Jon Tenney directs.
