'The Voice' Battle Rounds: Blake Shelton saves his steal until the last possible moment

The Battle Rounds are coming to an end on "The Voice."

The first ever Live Cross Battles are around the corner and coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton are looking to take the strongest team possible, because anything can happen.

"I’m the only coach with a steal left," Shelton said Tuesday. "I’ve learned my lesson in the last few seasons. I don’t want to use my steals up too soon, because every time, a battle comes along that I’m dying to have a steal left."

Blake Shelton was the last coach on "The Voice" to fill his team this season.

And the country crooner wasn't lying. Round after round, coaches said they wished they had a steal left.

Team Blake's Selkii, 31, and viral sensation Cecily Hennigan, 16, squared off on Avril Lavigne's "Head Above Water" in a touching duet performance. Shelton went with Selkii.

"I would have stolen (Hennigan) if I had a steal," Legend and Clarkson said. But the last swipe of the night was fittingly used on the final Battle Round of the season.

Kayslin Victoria, 16, and Oliv Blu, 21, from Team Legend, sang Khalid's "Location," fusing their respective pop and neo-soul roots. In the end, Legend went with Victoria.

"She’s really good at commanding the stage and she's really confident in her voice," he said after finalizing his team. "(Victoria) hits these notes like its nothing."

And Shelton hit his steal button like it was nothing. (And nothing left to lose, since she was his last choice.)

"I stole Oliv because there’s no one in the competition that fills Oliv’s lane," he said. "It’s very jazzy but I think there’s more to it."

It turns out Shelton was happy with his plan: "The team I’m taking into the Cross Battles is everything I hoped it would be. It is extremely diverse."

The new live Cross Battles will debut on "The Voice" next week, where coaches will chose one of their artists in real time to compete against another team's artist. Think school yard pick, singing edition.

Each artist will sing and viewers' votes will decide who moves on. The winner will be revealed the following night on the results show.

Each coach will get one save and one steal to use during the Cross Battle rounds.
