TV tonight: 'Idol,' Modern Family,' 'Black-ish'

American Idol
Fox, 8 ET/PT

Trent Harmon, La'Porsha Renae and Dalton Rapattoni show off their competitive talent one last time on 'American Idol.'

The end is near, as Trent Harmon, Dalton Rapattoni and La’Porsha Renae try to sing their way to a title that, if Idol is indeed a singing contest, should by rights go to Renae. But if that’s not how things turn out, put at least part of the blame on a final-season structure that combined results, performances and often-bizarre guest spots in ways that may have left viewers confused about when they were supposed to vote and what they were supposed to be voting for.

Modern Family
ABC, 9 ET/PT

All shows age, but shows with children have a specific aging problem, as young stars who could once rely on being cute are suddenly forced to rely on talent. Luckily, that hasn’t been a problem for Modern Family, particularly when it comes to Nolan Gould’s Luke and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons’s Lily, who have become two of the show’s best comic assets. Which is why Modern can build stories around them, such as tonight's, when Luke and Manny’s (Rico Rodriguez) willingness to babysit Lily makes the adults think they’re up to something.

Black-ish
ABC, 9:30 ET/PT

Two adults are the new draw on Family’s companion, which is having a stellar sophomore season. Anna Deavere Smith and John Witherspoon guest star as Dre and Bow try to pick a potential legal guardian for their kids.
