National Doughnut Day No. 2: Donuts deserve more than one holiday

Yes, after all that's going on, you deserve a donut today and, luckily enough, it's National Doughnut Day.

Whether spelled "donut" or "doughnut," Americans love the circular pastries, so much that there's two National Doughnut Days each year.

Back in June, there were lots of special deals for National Donut Day on June 5. This time around, there's no special promotions, but instead plenty of tributes to the snack on Twitter, where #NationalDoughnutDay and #NationalDonutDay were trending.

Today's celebration of donuts appears to be created as a marketing observation, but the June 5 day of celebration was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who brought soldiers doughnuts in World War I, according to NationalDayCalendar.com.

What's the best type of donut? Well, the Nerdist web site produced a ranking last year of the most popular dozen flavors that could start some arguments. For instance, where's coconut? And is traditional glazed underrated?

1) Boston Kreme

2) Chocolate Glazed

3) Glazed

4) Apple Fritter

5) French Cruller

6) Maple Frosted

7) Old Fashioned

8) Chocolate Frosted

9) Blueberry Glazed

10) Jelly

11) Strawberry Frosted

12) Powdered

These flavors not unique enough for you? You could still try Dunkin's new Spicy Ghost Pepper Donut, which the chain introduced for Halloween at participating restaurants.

A quick scan of Twitter didn't turn up any deals. However, you can download the Dunkin app and get special offers including $2 for 10 Munchkins.

That lack of special offers on donuts didn't seem to stop many from springing for treats.

For some, donuts just seem like something we all need amid the coronavirus pandemic and the election.
