  • BMW recalls about diesel X5s in the U.S. and Canada
  • A broken bolt can cause loss of power assit for steering, though vehicle will steer
  • No crashes or injuries reported

DETROIT — BMW is recalling about 29,800 X5 SUVs in the U.S. and about 5,000 in Canada because of a badly made bolt that can fail and cause loss of power assist for the steering.

The recall covers 2009-12 X5 xDrive 35d -- a model with a diesel engine and all-wheel drive.

According to BMW documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration web site, "a bolt for the engine drive belt pulley was manufactured incorrectly and may become loose. If the bolt backs out completely or breaks, the customer will experience a loss of power steering assist." BMW says the alternator warning light also will go on.

The belt uses engine power to drive accessories, such the power steering pump and alternator. The bolt secures the idler pulley that maintains belt tension.

While the power assist would be lost, the vehicle still can be steered, though with greater effort. BMW has no reports of crashes or injuries in the U.S. or Canada. The problem initially showed up in warranty claims in Canada.

BMW will notify owners next month to take the vehicle to a dealers to have the bolt replaced. It will be tightened to specification and a thread-lock compound will be used to further ensure it won't loosen. More information is available from BMW at Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
