'Game of Thrones' third episode: 3 things to know
Spoilers ahead.
In this episode of 'Game of Thrones,' the Lannisters are dealing with life after King Joffrey Baratheon's untimely death. He was poisoned in episode 2 at his own wedding celebration.
• Who did it?
Sansa Stark flees King's Landing with Ser Dontos Hollard. She is reunited with Lord Petyr Baelish who had made arrangements for Sansa to escape. Baelish quickly kills Dontos, saying that money only keeps a man quiet for so long. Death solidifies silence.
Meanwhile, Cersei believes that her brother Tyrion has murdered her son Joffrey. She wants her brother and lover Jaime to avenge their child's death. Tyrion is stationed in a dungeon until his trial. And Margaery mourns the fact that since Joffrey died she hasn't become queen.
In perhaps one of the most disturbing scenes of the series, Jaime forces himself on Cersei right by their dead son's altar. It starts with consensual kisses but after Cersei looks at Jaime's metal hand and recoils, Jaime refuses to listen to her pleas for him to stop. Cersei says it isn't right and Jaime says he does not care.
• What it takes to be king
Grandfather Tywin gives Tommen a history lesson in what it takes to be a good king. As Cersei and her son kneel over Joffrey's freshly dead body, Tywin wastes no time in instructing Tommen on how to lead, explaining to the young royal that he must listen to his advisers very closely. Not so surprising.
Tywin also tells Tommen in front of a grieving Cersei that Joffrey certainly was not a wise king seeing where he ended up. Tommen must also know how to marry and produce an heir to the throne. The grandfather and grandson leave the scene to discuss the details.
• Flying collars
Daenerys marches toward Meereen. After Daario Naharis bests the champion of Meereen in a dual by throwing a knife into his horse's eye and slashing the rider, Daenerys explains to the people how she has freed slaves along her journey.
Then she instructs her army to catapult barrels of broken collars into the city to further underscore her point. Impressive.
