Man near White House with firearm prompts lockdown

WASHINGTON — A man with a firearm walking Saturday afternoon near the White House led authorities to briefly lock down the property as a precaution, according to Secret Service officials.

A uniformed Secret Service officer confronted the unidentified man Saturday afternoon as he walked along Pennsylvania Avenue near Madison Place on the east side of Lafayette Park. The man, whose name was not released, was placed under arrest after a brief struggle and turned over to District of Columbia police.

He faces several charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying unregistered ammunition and resisting arrest.

President Barack Obama was not at the White House at the time. He was in Maryland, playing golf at Andrews Air Force Base.

Earlier Saturday about three blocks away on Pennsylvania Avenue, District of Columbia police arrested Eric Roberts, 27, of Florida and Danny Hamilton, 35, of Louisiana in connection with graffiti on sidewalks and buildings in the area of Saturday's Million Mask March, which organizers describe on their Facebook page as a march against government and corporate corruption.

It was not immediately known whether the arrests were related.

Police photographs of the morning incident appear to show the word “corrupt” and images of English anti-hero Guy Fawkes spray painted at the FBI building and graffiti at the newly opened Trump International Hotel. Officers confiscated several cans of spray paint and stencils.

A police cruiser also was damaged, D.C. police said.

Roberts was charged with defacing the FBI building. Hamilton was charged with destruction of government property — the police cruiser — and resisting arrest.
