Second Georgia deputy dies after Sunday shooting

WMAZ-TV, Macon, Ga.

PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — A second Peach County Sheriff’s deputy shot Sunday while responding to a dispute between neighbors has died, according to District Attorney David Cooke.

Deputy Daryl Smallwood

Cooke made the announcement during a news conference Tuesday that he called to talk about murder charges against Rod Stanley Elrod.

Deputy Daryl Smallwood had been on life support at Medical Center-Navicent Health in Macon since the ambush. Peach County Sheriff's Sgt. Patrick Sondron, 41, died in the shooting in Byron.

Ariz. police officer shot, killed; suspect sought

Smallwood, 39, had worked for the Peach County Sheriff’s Office since 2015.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Elrod, who was shot in the abdomen, was served with warrants while in the hospital, one for murder and four for aggravated assault.

Cooke said he expected additional charges to be added for Smallwood's murder.

Police searching Elrod's home said they found security footage that shows Elrod putting on a bulletproof vest after shooting the two deputies. Also in the footage is a brief exchange between Elrod and the deputies before Elrod began firing.

Sgt. Patrick Sondron

Sondron and Smallwood were called to the neighborhood on Hardison Road near Highway 42 for a reported dispute among neighbors. Two people riding on ATVs reported that they were confronted by an armed man.

The deputies went to the home where they were told the armed man lived. According to the GBI, more than 50 shots were fired during the shootout.

Visitation with Sondron's family will be Wednesday evening at Southside Baptist Church in Warner Robins.

On Thursday, funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. ET, also at Southside Baptist Church. Sondron will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

No details have been released yet for Smallwood's funeral.
