Health roundup: Childless men and women may die sooner

Kim Painter, Special for USA TODAY
Couples who undergo fertility treatment but don't end up with children may face a higher risk of early death, new research suggests.

Your Thursday morning health roundup:

Kids and longevity: A life without kids has its advantages -- but it may be shorter, at least for those who are not childless by choice, a new study suggests. Men and women who went through infertility treatment and did not end up with children -- through either pregnancy or adoption -- were two to four times more likely to die young than those who had kids, researchers found. One theory: Parents may be more motivated to stay safe and healthy. Also possible: the stress of failed infertility treatment may cause health problems. (NBC News)

Too much trust: Why do so many older adults fall for scams? They actually may be less able to recognize and react to facial cues that younger people use to spot untrustworthy individuals, research suggests. (New York Times)

Smoking and hangovers: Smoking cigarettes makes hangovers worse for heavy-drinking college students, a new study finds. Best advice: avoid both. (HealthDay)

Today's talker: With recreational marijuana becoming legal in Washington state today, pot-using parents may find themselves in some new quandaries: What about the kids? Pediatrician Leslie Walker shares this advice at Teenology 101, a blog run by Seattle Children's Hospital: "Think about how your use affects your children. You may not realize it, but your children watch you closely. Have a discussion among your adult friends and family about the acceptability of using marijuana during gatherings at your homes. If adults eat marijuana brownies at parties where children are present, make sure they are only accessible to adults. Just like parents are encouraged to lock up alcohol and medications, parents should lock up their pot."
