Police: Pipe bombs thrown from car during chase

KGW-TV, Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — A suspect allegedly threw four pipe bombs from a car Tuesday while being pursued by police in Portland. He is still at large, police say.

Neal Allen Panschow, 43, was suspected of driving a silver Honda Civic just after 4:40 p.m. when officers tried to pull the car over, according to Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The driver sped away and threw what appeared to be an explosive device from the car onto the roadway, Simpson said.

Officers immediately stopped following the car and blocked all traffic in the area where the device was thrown. Some neighbors were evacuated during the search.

A bomb squad called to the scene found a total of four pipe bombs in the surrounding streets and yards, Simpson said.

None of the bombs detonated and all have been removed, police said. They asked residents to be on alert and report any other suspicious items.

Police were still searching for Panschow and said he should be considered armed and dangerous. He is wanted on a warrant from Tillamook County and is suspected of leading police on three other pursuits in Clackamas and Multnomah counties, Simpson said.
