As we enter a new year — and a new decade — most federal offices and plenty of private businesses will be closed on New Year's Day.

But if you need to get some last-minute shopping and errands done on New Year's Eve, you're in luck. Most private businesses and government agencies will remain open on Dec. 31, though most will have modified business hours. Same goes for sending and receiving letters and packages through the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx.

Here's a list of what businesses will be open and closed on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, and New Year's Day, Jan. 1.

Banks

Most major banks — Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Capital One — will remain open on New Year's Eve through normal operating hours.

All banks will be closed on New Year's Day, including the Federal Reserve.

Courts

All courts will be closed on New Year's Day, as it is a federal holiday. Many courts will also be closed on New Year's Eve, but not all. For instance, California courts will remain open on New Year's Eve.

Federal offices

All government offices will be closed New Year's Day, but will remain open New Year's Eve.

Garbage

Most collection services will be operational on New Year's Eve, but not on New Year's Day. They will resume services on Thursday.

Mail services

The U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx will all be operational New Year's Eve. On New Year's Day, USPS will be closed. UPS and FedEx will be closed, too, but both service's critical deliveries operations will be open.

Stock markets

The stock market will be open on New Year's Eve on normal trading hours. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed on New Year's Day, while U.S. bond markets will be on a half-day schedule, closing at 2 p.m.

Libraries

Most libraries will remain open on New Year's Eve, but with shortened hours. Call your local branch beforehand.

All libraries will be closed on New Year's Day.

National parks

The National Park Service will be closed both New Year's Eve and Day.

Retail businesses

Most national chains will keep their doors open normal hours on New Year's Eve, though hours may vary based on location.

Many larger brick-and-mortar stores — Target, Best Buy and Walmart will remain open on New Year's Day, though their hours may still vary depending on location. Costco and Sam's Club, however, will both be closed on New Year's Day.

It's a good rule of thumb to call your local store beforehand.

Grocery stores

A good number of grocery stores — such as Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's and Giant — will remain open on New Year's Eve, though their hours may vary.

More will be closed on New Year's Day, including Trader Joe's, but drugstore chains like CVS and convenience stores will remain open.
