New political group aims to mobilize 2 million women for the 2020 election

WASHINGTON — In a video released on Monday morning, a coalition of female activists announced the formation of a new organization — Supermajority — that will work to mobilize women for the 2020 election and on other policy issues relating to the women's space. 

The group will be led by three prominent activists in the progressive community  — Cecile Richards, the former head of Planned Parenthood, Alicia Garza, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter, and Ai-jen Poo, the executive director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. 

"Supermajority is a new organization for women who want to build our collective power and use it to change this country for good," declared the video.  

According to the group's website, its mission is to be a "membership-based organization that affirms and builds women’s power and serves as a one-stop shop for advocacy, community building, and electoral participation aimed at transforming our country and building an intergenerational, multiracial movement for women’s equity."

The group's formation was met with a positive response on Twitter from progressive activists. Amanda Litman, a former Clinton 2016 staffer who co-founded the candidate recruitment group Run for Something, tweeted "Can't WAIT."

The group aims to train and organize at least 2 million women ahead of the 2020 elections. It won't be endorsing political candidates, but its accompanying organization, the Supermajority Education Fund, would be working to educate female voters about issues relating to women and would advocate for what Richards told the Associated Press would be a "women’s new deal.”

“Women are mad as hell and we’ve been in resistance mode for two years,” Garza said to the Associated Press. “Now it’s time to equip people.”
