New poll shows Trump widening lead over Biden after president's shaky debate performance

WASHINGTON - Former President Donald Trump’s lead against President Joe Biden has widened after Biden’s shaky debate performance last week that further put concerns about his age, 81, in the spotlight.

The New York Times/Siena College poll, conducted between June 28 and July 2, found that Trump leads Biden 49% to 43% among likely voters nationally - a three point increase for the former president since the last New York Times/Siena College poll taken before the debate.

Among registered voters, Trump holds a lead of 49% to 41% - also a three point swing in favor of the former president since the last poll, according to the Times.

The poll, conducted among 1,532 registered voters nationwide, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points among the registered voter sample and plus or minus 2.9 percentage points for the likely voter electorate.

The findings come as several Democrats have aired concerns about Biden’s candidacy in the 2024 race and held discussions over whether he should continue his run against Trump.

"President Biden has work to do, but will be running on mobilizing issues that we are confident will bring him to victory this November," said Biden campaign pollster Molly Murphy.
