Why does John McCain, at the age of 77, subject himself to chitchat with late-night TV hosts?

As the 2008 Republican presidential nominee told Seth Meyers on Monday, it's all about reaching out to a sought-after demographic.

"What better way to reach ... young voters than to be on Saturday Night Live, just like being on this show," McCain said on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. "I don't think a lot of old geezers like me are watching, right? The hardest thing for a politician today is staying in touch with younger people and their hopes and dreams and their aspirations."

McCain gave props to President Obama's 2012 campaign team and its use of social media, which the Arizona senator said was key to Obama's re-election.

In other topics, McCain blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin -- whose government sanctioned McCain and other senators by putting them on a "no entry" list. The senator joked that his "secret campaign fund bank account in Moscow is now frozen."

As for Russia itself, McCain derided Putin's homeland as a "gas station run by a mafia masquerading as a country."
