Trump's Day: Meetings, phone calls, an executive order, and Mitch McConnell
The first Tuesday of the Trump administration features more meetings, another executive order, a phone call with the leader of India, and a day-capping meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Things begin with a 9 a.m. ET "listening session" with what the White House calls "key automobile industry leaders."
It could be a tense session; Trump, seeking to change free-trade rules, has questioned the commitment of car makers to making their products in the United States.
"Will be meeting at 9:00 with top automobile executives concerning jobs in America," Trump tweeted early Tuesday. "I want new plants to be built here for cars sold here!"
Mid-morning brings a Trump meeting with White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.
A day after signing three executive orders dealing with trade, abortion policy, and a federal hiring freeze, Trump is scheduled to sign another executive order — singular — at 11 a.m., according to the schedule.
Aides have not said what this order will be.
In the afternoon, Trump has a 1 p.m. phone call with a key foreign leader, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by a 1:30 meeting with new CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Members of the Senate leadership are scheduled to be at the White House at 3 p.m. for a meeting with the new president.
Trump's public schedule ends at 3:45 p.m. with the most prominent Senate Republican, McConnell. They are expected to discuss a legislative agenda that includes tax cuts and a repeal of President Obama's health care law.
