Good morning, friends of The Short List!
What a week, huh? We got a new president (!). A woman of color became VP (!!). And, for the first time ever, a rescue dog is moving into the White House (!!!).
It's safe to say this week has been jam-packed with politics, but spoiler alert: This Short List is, too. So before we dive into the long reads you missed on the political spectrum this week, let's talk about something equally important: COVID-19:
- The first US case. The first death. The first outbreak at a nursing home. A year after COVID-19 arrived in the US, the front line staff in Washington state are still holding on.
- Grassroots efforts are underway to ensure vaccine access for people of color, as early roll out shows disparities and inequities.
- A different epidemic: 100 years ago, a virus raged through Nevada, and it wasn't Spanish Flu. From about 1915 to 1920, the state was grappling with an outbreak of rabies.
