The Carson Wentz era in Philadelphia is over.
The Indianapolis Colts pulled off the latest quarterback trade, acquiring Wentz in exchange for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 pick that could turn into a first-rounder. Wentz will be Frank Reich's fourth different starting quarterback in his four seasons as Colts head coach.
While Wentz gets a fresh start in Indy and the Colts reunite him with his former offensive coordinator, Reich, the Eagles get stuck with a $33.8 million cap hit while absorbing Wentz's signing bonus.
With Wentz getting traded, no quarterback selected in the first round from 2009-2016 are with their original team. That's 22 quarterbacks!
Now, Wentz, Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff have been dealt to new teams this offseason. Who will be the next quarterback to find a new team?
Carson Wentz trade fallout
- Winners and losers: While Jalen Hurts becomes the presumed Eagles starter for 2021, Mitchell Trubisky missed out on an possible opportunity to resurrect his career in Indianapolis.
- Where might Bears turn now?: Will they stand pat with Trubisky (welp!), or make a play for one of the other veteran passers presumably available via trade?
- Doug Pederson takes biggest 'L' in Wentz trade: The ex-Eagles coach opted to go with Hurts at QB and then was fired and replaced by an unproven coach.
- Trade is a win-win for Colts, Eagles, Wentz: Wentz gets a fresh start, the Colts remain a contender and the Eagles free up some money.
- Expect more QB turnover: It is within the realm of possibility that more than half of the NFL's teams could have a new starting quarterback next season.
