Who’s going to join Simone Biles in Tokyo?

We’ll get a better idea after this weekend’s national gymnastics championships, where 29 women are trying to make their case for one of the three remaining spots on the U.S. team. (OK, technically Biles isn’t on the team yet, but c’mon. She’s the reigning world and Olympic champion and she hasn’t lost an all-around competition in eight years. She’s going to Tokyo.)

The top two women at Olympic trials later this month are guaranteed spots on the team, and combined scores from nationals and trials will be one of the factors the selection committee uses to pick the remaining two gymnasts for the Tokyo team.

Simone Biles competes on the uneven bars during the FloGymnastics GK U.S. Classic Senior Competition Session 2 at Indiana Convention Center.

And, yes, despite the pandemic and a state of emergency in Japan, the Tokyo Games are happening. Despite vocal opposition by the Japanese public, International Olympic Committee and Tokyo organizing officials are adamant that the Games will go on. “I believe that the possibility of these Games going on is 100% that we will do this,” Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto told the BBC this week.

Here are some other stories you should know, including Jordan Chiles, who was best known for getting a shoutout from actress Gal Gadot, but is now a threat to make the US Olympic team.
