Inside a packed Olympic trials weekend🏃🏾‍♀️🥇

Team USA stars put on a show this weekend, which was packed with action from U.S. Olympic trials in swimming and track & field. So let’s get to it.

🏃🏾‍♀️Track & field

  • The rundown: Star sprinters Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles won the 100 meters on Saturday and Sunday night, respectively. Richardson is headed to her first Olympics Games in Paris while Lyles is now a two-time Olympian.
  • What they said: "Every step I took, it felt correct and I felt well in my positions. We got to the acceleration phase and my hips came through and I didn't feel like I had to press very hard,” said Lyles, whose 9.83 in the final was the third-fastest time this year. “I felt like my knees were going straight into the track. They were directly underneath me. Every step I took felt more powerful than the last. So I'm like, 'I got this race.'" Watch the final.
    • "Everything I’ve been through is everything I’ve been through to be in this moment right now," said Richardson, whose 10.71 is the fastest time in the world this season. "And I would say going into the (Olympics), I don’t put a time on myself, I just know that if I execute and run the race that I trained and prepared for, the time comes with it. I’m just excited to go out there and run a well-executed race.” Watch the final.
Richardson struck trials gold. Now she's going for Olympic gold.
  • What else happened: Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarik also qualified for the Paris Olympics in the 100, while Christian Coleman did not. A 16-year-old named Quincy Wilson qualified in the 400m. Catch up on all the results from Saturday and Sunday. We are also keeping track of results in every event here.
  • What’s next: Here’s the full schedule for track & field trials, which run through June 30. NBC and Peacock are carrying all the action.

🏊 Swimming

  • The rundown: Star swimmer Caeleb Dressel, who has seven Olympic gold medals to his name, won the 100m butterfly and the 50m freestyle. He also qualified for the 4x100m free relay.
  • What he said: “It's tough making it through the trials; this truly is the hardest sport,” said Dressel, now a three-time Olympian. “It's more nerve-racking than the Olympics. It's tough to make the team here, (and) it's the way it should be.” Watch the 100m fly.
  • What else happened: Ryan Murphy made Olympic trials history, sweeping the 100m and 200m backstroke. Lilly King got engaged right after an event. Katie Ledecky won all four of her events at trials but will focus on the 400m, 800, 1,500m and 4x200 relay in Paris.
  • What’s next: Trials are over, but Team USA swimmers are getting back in the pool straight away. “The job isn’t done and it’s back to work immediately,” said 100 backstroke world-record holder Regan Smith, who will be one of the stars of the U.S. team, swimming in three individual events in Paris and one relay.
