It's finally time to shrug off winter, fling open the shades, and let some fresh air into your life. But while that spring sunshine looks great illuminating the new grass and flowers, it may also shed light on a surprisingly dirty house.

Kenmore 81614 canister vacuum

The most essential tool for any clean home is, of course, a good vacuum. Our choice for most people is the Kenmore 81614, which costs about $240. While some consider them outdated, canister vacuums like this provide the best suction power for truly deep cleaning. The Kenmore's additional attachments are also particularly useful for furniture and drapes.

Lugging a canister vacuum around does have its disadvantages, though, which is why many have opted for a smaller, bagless stick vacuum. The new Dyson V11 Torque Drive outclasses everything on the market, but at $699 you'll certainly pay for the privilege. Fortunately, the Tineco A10 Hero is substantially cheaper—just $199—and gets the job done well enough. Because stick vacuums sacrifice power for portability, you'll only want one if you have more hardwood than carpet in your home.

Sterilite Ultra Storage Box with Wheels

Once the dust is picked up, spring cleaning is mainly a matter of organizing all that stuff you own. Sure, you're welcome to channel your inner Marie Kondo and throw out what you care to part with—in our top-rated Simplehuman trashcan, of course—but chances are you'll still have a lot to store. A good under-bed storage bin like the Sterilite Ultra Storage Box is the perfect way to take advantage of unoccupied space.

Bounty Select-A-Size paper towels

In the war on dirt, the kitchen is its own battleground. That's why the Reviewed staff put all it's hard-won findings in a single, encompassing Best Kitchen Essentials guide. Here, we found that it's the little things that can make the difference. They may not cost a lot, but spending an extra dollar here and there makes cleaning a whole lot easier. Topping our list of small but effective upgrades: Bounty Select-A-Size paper towels, Scotch-Brite Dobie cleaning sponging, and Glad ForceFlexPlus Advanced Protection trash bags. Trust us, you'll appreciate the difference.

So that's it, no more excuses. It's time to get cleaning! Need more recommendations? We've spent thousands of hours testing all kinds of products. Here's some more that might help with cleaning your home and yard:
