College flier lists 'top ten ways to get away with rape'

USATODAY
A flier posted in a freshman dorm at Miami University listed the “Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape."

A flier posted in a co-ed freshmen dorm at Miami University listed the "Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape," The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The author suggested everything from slipping roofies into a girl's drink to drugging her to slitting her throat so she can't identify her attacker.

Tip 10 read: "RAPE RAPE RAPE, it's college boys (sic) live it up!!"

University officials have called a mandatory meeting for male students at McBride Hall and launched a police investigation that could result in internal disciplinary action for the student responsible, the paper reports.

Police presence at the dorm has been increased.

Leaders in a student organization that works to prevent sexual assault criticized Miami's response, saying it didn't go far enough on a campus where at least 27 sexual assaults were reported since 2009.

Junior Kate Van Fossen, vice present of Women Against Violence and Sexual Assault, said the university should have notified the student body, told them the behavior was unacceptable and wouldn't be tolerated at Miami.

"The university is brushing this issue … under the rug," Van Fossen told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It could have been a joke, but the fact of the matter is that those thoughts are crossing someone's mind. There are girls living in a hall where someone came up with that. It's just disturbing."

Barbara Jones, Miami University's vice president for student affairs, said the incident didn't merit sending out an alert to all students because it didn't pose an immediate threat.

"All of our evidence shows it was confined strictly to McBride Hall," she said.

Jones said university officials take student safety seriously. "I read the flier. I was shocked. It has no place on our campus or any other campus," she said.
