Michelle Obama's chocolate chip wins cookie prize

USATODAY
First lady Michelle Obama spoke at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner.

The race between President Obama and Mitt Romney isn't the only one that's close. Michelle Obama and Ann Romney also squared off ... on cookie recipes.

The first lady won Family Circle magazine's quadrennial Presidential Cookie Bake Off, edging out Ann Romney's M&M treats by 287 votes out of more than 9,000 cast. Readers tried out the recipes this summer and voted for their favorite.

The Obama cookie recipe, handed down by the godmother to first daughters Malia and Sasha, doesn't sound like it would pass muster with Michelle Obama's push for healthy eating. The recipe calls for two sticks of softened, unsalted butter plus a stick of Crisco's butter-flavored shortening -- as well as two kinds of chocolate chips.

Michelle Obama lost to Cindy McCain in the 2008 version of the bake-off. Family Circle notes that in four out of five recent cookie contests, the winner has gone on to become first lady.
