Paul Ryan defends Romney on 'binders' comment

First Big Bird, now "binders full of women."

Rep. Paul Ryan defended Mitt Romney on Wednesday, explaining what his running mate meant when he uttered the phrase that went viral at the second presidential debate

"All he simply meant was that he went out of his way to try to recruit qualified women to serve in his administration when he was governor," Ryan said on CBS' This Morning. "That's really what he was saying. And by the way, he has an exceptional record of hiring women in very prominent positions in his administration, and that's the point he was making."

Katherine Fenton, an undecided voter who participated in the town hall debate Tuesday night at Hofstra University, asked about pay equity for women.

"I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney responded.

American Bridge for the 21st Century, a Democratic super PAC that does opposition research, went up with a new website overnight to highlight Romney's record on issues affecting women.

At least two Twitter accounts -- @RomneyBinders and @RomneyBinder -- sprouted. The one with the "S" in the handle has more than 33,000 followers. It appears to be the same account that was @FiredBigBird, which sprouted wings after Romney remarked in the first debate that he wants to cut funding for PBS even though he likes the Sesame Street character.

As for Romney's hiring record, The Boston Globereported that Romney did not have any female partners when he was CEO of Bain Capital, before he became Massachusetts governor.
