Senate hopeful makes pitch via 'Monday Night Football'

Catalina Camia, USA TODAY
Bill Clinton campaigned in Arizona for Democrat Richard Carmona, who is running for U.S. Senate.

Talk about a captive audience: The last ad of Democrat Richard Carmona's Arizona Senate campaign will air on ESPN's Monday Night Football.

Carmona, a former U.S. surgeon general making his first foray into political office, is in a tight race against GOP Rep. Jeff Flake for Arizona's open Senate seat. The commercial concludes with clips from former president Bill Clinton's recent rally in Tempe with Carmona.

"I can't think of a person in America who is more needed at this moment in our history in the U.S. Senate," Clinton said. "If you want America to come together and not be torn apart, if you want there to be a 21st Century, modern American middle class, you've got to vote for Rich Carmona for the United States Senate."

Will Feltus of National Media, a Republican ad-buying firm, says his research shows high-turnout Republicans tend to watch a lot of ESPN and Republicans, in general, watch a lot of football. So maybe Carmona is onto something with a campaign ad that will be seen by many in his home state, including quotes from the Arizona Daily Star stressing the candidate's "independence" and "bipartisan appeal."
