Newt Gingrich gets a cameo on 'Parks and Rec'

Newt Gingrich is a former House speaker and GOP presidential candidate.

Who knows what you'll find when you're on location filming a TV show.

The cast and crew of NBC's Parks and Recreation were in Indianapolis on Monday, filming at St. Elmo Steak House when lo and behold there was former GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

Turns out the ex-House speaker was in town for a meeting with outgoing Gov. Mitch Daniels, so the TV show's honchos decided to write a Gingrich cameo appearance into the episode.

"It was a completely random chance," co-creator Mike Schur told the Indianapolis Star. "But you can't pass up an opportunity like that."

Series star Rob Lowe tweeted: "Latest surprise drop by on set: Speaker Newt Gingrich! So we made up a scene and put him in! #AllHappeningInIndy."

Gingrich now joins a list of pols, including Vice President Biden and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who have had their star turns on Parks and Recreation, which is about a mid-level bureaucrat in fictional Pawnee, Ind.
