GOP group pushes back on Obama's tax hike in ad

Catalina Camia, USA TODAY
President Obama is insisting upper-income taxpayers pay more.

A conservative group founded by GOP strategist Karl Rove is launching a new TV ad about the "fiscal cliff" negotiations, pushing back at President Obama's calls for tax hikes on the wealthy.

"A huge tax increase is his solution. No real spending reforms. Instead ... more taxes," the narrator says in the ad by Crossroads GPS, the sister group of the super PAC, American Crossroads. Both groups spent heavily in the 2012 elections.

Obama and Congress are trying to avert going over a fiscal cliff when two budget triggers are scheduled to take effect: Bush-era tax cuts take effect on Dec. 31 and $1.2 trillion in spending cuts kick in on Jan. 2.

Obama has insisted that couples who earn more than $250,000 a year should pay more and is seeking less onerous spending cuts. Republicans want to overhaul the tax code, raise the eligibility age for Medicare and cut more spending.

"President Obama's idea of a balanced plan is that we pay more and government gets to spend more," Crossroads GPS President and CEO Steven Law said in a statement. "The White House has shown it is not serious about the debt, as it has yet to propose significant spending cuts to go along with its massive proposed tax hikes. Serious revenue concessions have been made, but Obama won't take yes for an answer."

Crossroads GPS says it is spending $500,000 to air the spot for one week starting Thursday. The ad will be seen on national cable TV outlets and run during the Sunday morning talk shows in the Washington market.
