Cory Booker: I have 'policy differences' with Christie

Catalina Camia, USA TODAY
Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a Democrat, is weighing a bid for governor or senator.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker says there are "definite policy differences" he has with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie that may prompt him to challenge the Republican next year.

Booker, a Democrat, showed a bit of his wonky side Wednesday night on The Daily Show, talking about such weighty topics as income inequality and New Jersey's transportation trust fund. He specifically cited the earned income tax credit, which Christie cut, as an example of where they differ.

"He's a friend of mine but there are definitely policy differences that could provide a real reason to run," Booker told Jon Stewart. "There are definite areas where I disagree with the governor, and that's what I'm considering now -- is it worthy of a run?"

Booker said Sunday he'll decide in the next couple of weeks whether to challenge Christie or run for the U.S. Senate in 2014. Christie's popularity is riding high in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

This being a show that airs on Comedy Central, Stewart poked fun at some of Booker's well-documented exploits, such as running into a burning house to save a neighbor. He called him the "superhero mayor of Newark."

"Do you patrol at night?" Stewart asked. "Are you filming an episode of Cops? What are you doing?"

Christie was a guest on The Daily Show last week.
