Your Say: Add-on fees hit travelers
- Hotels, rental car companies and cruise lines are starting to charge additional fees.
- Airlines have been tacking on fees for services that used to be free, such as checked baggage.
- Some travelers are fed up with these unexpected charges.
Airlines aren't the only ones charging additional fees. Hotels, rental car companies and cruise lines are, too. Comments from Facebook:
I don't understand the thought behind breaking things down into individual expenses. Back when luggage, a meal and a movie were included in the airfare, presumably it covered those expenses. You may have grumbled about the price when you bought the ticket, but by the time you boarded the plane, you were thinking about your trip! Now, you have the pleasure of being reminded of the high cost each time you face another fee.

Everybody wants everything as cheap as they can get it. Therefore, you pay a base price for a base experience. Anything more, you pay for.

I'm only flying when I don't have an option. The travel industry ought to get over the fear of charging what it needs to for profitability, not by gouging the public with add-ons. As long as it remains deceptive, I'll stay home.

Well, of course you're going to get smacked with fees; how else do you think airlines pay for fuel, employees, equipment and more?

As for fees, there is no free lunch. You either pay an extra fee, or the fee is built into the fare.
