Your Say: Homes pack in generations

The proportion of Americans in multi-generational households is the highest it has been since the 1950s. Not only adult kids but also aging parents are moving in. Comments from Facebook:

With the economy the way it is, the move toward more multi-generational households is just going to continue. I just hope it works out for everyone.

The proportion of Americans in multi-generational households is increasing. Not only adult kids but also aging parents are moving in.

This is my family's new normal as well. I love it. I would rather have my mom with me than on her own miles away. I'm glad home builders are taking note and are accommodating the trend.

When I lived in Hawaii, this was the norm. Several generations all lived in one home. Housing is so expensive there that most people don't have a choice.

Funny, it's like we're coming full circle. In the past, it was common for multiple generations to live together under one roof. Now we are so protective of our space and privacy, even among family, that the idea of living together is met with negativity. However, each generation has a lot to offer the others. Being a part of an extended family under one roof can be a very positive thing.

I actually like this. I think more children should invite their elderly parents to live with them if that is an option. From having a father who died unexpectedly at a young age, I just think life is too short. You should spend as much time as you can with those you love. I look forward to having my mom live with us when she retires.

The article states multi-generational households are the highest since the 1950s but fails to mention that until then, it had been the norm for many people. Such homes ensured economic security for future generations.

I would have my father move in with me and my wife before I send him to a home, but it's his decision. He might want to stay with people who have similar interests, but I hope that day is a long time from now.
