Your Say: Mourdock's stance on abortion shocks some

Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock set off a furor when asked Tuesday whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest. Comments from Facebook:

It is the height of arrogance and narcissism to claim that not only does one know the mind of God, but that God's mind aligns with one's political preferences.

The issue of why God permits evil in the world has been subject to philosophical debate for centuries.

Tom Kane

A person who is a Christian typically believes God is in control of everything, whether a city getting hit by a hurricane, a war or, yes, even rape. It was God's will. However, that is not the same as saying it's good that it happened, which Mourdock clearly stated: "Does God want people raped? Of course not."

Christians also believe there is evil in this world. Leftists would rather pick apart someone's words than acknowledge the evil in the world that is the cause of things such as rape.

Christopher Bacon

He's absolutely correct: If you believe in an all-powerful God, then the only logical conclusion is that he intended for the rape to occur.

This is why we must move beyond bronze-age beliefs in deities and move into the 21st century. There is no God and never was.

What Mourdock had meant to say probably was: God can take something bad and bring good out of it. But God's intent? I don't think so.

This is the true face of the conservative social agenda in this country. If this is one of your values, then go ahead and vote Republican. However, the consequences will be very long-lasting on our society, far longer than the economy and unemployment that will heal in time no matter who is elected president.

And since when did the individual statements of one candidate who hasn't even been elected become the adopted platform of the GOP? There are plenty of individual wackos on the liberal side.

Steven Siegel

Any pregnancy is God's intention! What is so difficult to understand about that? Even if you are a Democrat, you must believe this if you are a Christian and if you believe in God. This is just a simple fact. Mourdock is just professing his faith.

The separation of church and state is where this issue starts to become blurry. I believe in a woman's right to abort an unwanted child, but it must be an out-of-pocket expense, except in cases of rape, incest or the health of the mother.
