Your Say: People want votes to count

Letters to the editor:

I know that federal law mandates when Election Day shall be held. Due to the catastrophic state of the eastern seaboard, I don't believe next week's polls will accurately represent the electorate.

I currently sit in the dark in the upper northwest region of New Jersey. I doubt polling places will be ready to adequately handle voters, either because of power outages or debris that restricts travel and accessibility. Also, at this time, voting will not be a priority given the hurdles people are dealing with daily, for example loss of power, gas shortages and property damage.

Carmen Flores votes early Oct. 25 in Las Vegas.

Congress should consider delaying this year's vote so that all Americans have optimal conditions to cast their ballots.

Christine Angela Ferraro; Stanhope, N.J.

Although many voters welcome the opportunity to vote early to avoid standing in line too long at the polls Nov. 6, they could regret having cast their votes before realizing which candidate they really prefer.

Watching TV and having to listen to all the campaign ads gets tiring — can become almost disgusting — but waiting until you've heard everything you need to know about a candidate could save you from making a serious mistake in voting early.

EARLY VOTING RIPE FOR FRAUD

Why would you want people voting early, before the debates even, except to enable voter fraud? For the good of national unity, we should have all voting on the same day (or during the same week, if there's good reason for someone not to vote on Election Day).

Bruce Deitrick Price

Want to stop voter fraud? Require a thumb print on every ballot. Verify a random sample and if the thumb print doesn't match, find out why before counting the ballot.

Richard Fink

Voting six weeks before the election is insane. In my opinion, it opens the door to numerous shenanigans. Voting is too precious an act to open it up to mischievousness by either side.

COULD 2000 HAPPEN AGAIN?

This election will not be a replay of 2000. The reason for this is the incredible momentum gained by Mitt Romney. Whatever the polls may say, there has been a mass upsurge in favor of Romney from the first week of October onward. The American people are concerned about the economy, massive unemployment and a flawed foreign policy, which resulted in the murder of an ambassador and a prolonged bloodbath in Syria.

Abraham Yeshuratnam

I hope it isn't an exact replay of the 2000 presidential election, as in the Republican Party steals the election and the Supreme Court decides who voted and who didn't.

Chas Holman

Considering what happened in 2000, it would be ironic to see Romney win the popular vote but to no avail because he loses the electoral vote and, ultimately, the presidency.
