#tellusatoday: Motives behind those cheating hearts

In light of the David Petraeus scandal, we asked our followers on Twitter why they think people, especially powerful people, cheat. Comments are edited for clarity and grammar:

Men don't cheat because they are fulfilled. The wife usually knows but chooses to do nothing. They continue to cheat because they can.

CIA Director David Petraeus and his wife, Holly, attend a ceremony at Fort Campbell, Ky., on Aug. 17.

Those in power cheat because they have a skewed perception of reality and can't fathom getting caught.

-- @colleenbidwill

Some people are simply bored with their spouses of so many years.

-- @glasshippo

I think people feel emotionally disconnected from their spouses.

-- @xballer42

Men cheat because women allow them to cheat. The wives and the mistresses. Plain and simple.

-- @truemira

It's not just men who cheat. Women cheat, in my opinion, just as much. It's human nature. Maybe we need to accept it.

-- @bmumford1

People like living on the edge and chasing what they think is the next best thing.
