State of the Union Address

Readers' best comments on Donald Trump's State of the Union

The top 10 comments from our readers in reaction to President Donald Trump's second State of the Union address.

USA TODAY

President Donald Trump delivered his second State of the Union address on Tuesday before Congress, Supreme Court justices and members of his Cabinet. The speech was delayed a week because of the partial government shutdown. Our readers shared their thoughts on Facebook and Twitter:

I watched the address. Absolutely nothing of substance. Except for Trump's threat to Congress: "There can be no peace or legislation, if there is war and investigations." The rest? Staging.

I give Trump an A+. This was much better than I thought. I loved the ties to WWII history.

— @LoisBolin

We're all tired of hearing about the wall, so Trump should just shut up about it. We know how he feels and we know how Congress feels.

Instead, Trump should talk about something else and let the House and Senate bang out an agreement on the upcoming spending bill. Flapping his lips more can only hurt the proceedings.

— Rob Anderson

I am not a Trump supporter, however, I believe this speech may help to unify the parties. Overall a seven out of 10.

@EnriquePagan

Trump knocked this speech out of the park. Trump will be president for six more years with this economy. Democrats looked weak and petty in this speech.

Trump's SOTU

For an awkward public speaker, I actually think Trump did an admirable job with the State of the Union address tonight. Civil. Amenable. Not hostile.

As a stand-alone speech, I liked that he honored women, legal immigration and a Customs Enforcement official, and he championed the unborn and highlighted bipartisan prison reform.

It was up to Trump to explain how the border is a genuine crisis, and not merely a policy disagreement. We all know that terrorists and drug smugglers won't be stopped by the wall. They enter through legal ports.

— Reid Davis

I thought Trump gave his best speech and he reached out to the Democrats — who have done everything they can to fight him and demonize him at every turn, all for political power.

Securing the border benefits all Americans, and having a wall is supported by the many Americans.

Fact check wasn't able to keep up with all the lying tonight.

Typical blather from 45. Much of it very irrelevant. I heard nothing new and as usual took credit for anything positive. Trump played to his core. It was troubling he said "no legislation" with investigation.

I'm waiting for all the recaps. I long since realized that it's better that I not listen to President Donald Trump at length for my own sanity. Both because what he says is so utterly rage-inducing in its stupidity, and because hearing him slowly and brutally murder the English language pains me.

At what point do we realize a supposedly good economy isn't the same thing as stagnated wages, unaffordable health care, housing and higher education?

In other words, can you have a good economy while people are struggling? Apparently yes.

He made the pinchy hand 118 times tonight. This was way down from his 2018 State of the Union pinchy hand count of 149. Gonna have to do some analysis to figure out why. More to follow ...

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation," - Dr. Seuss? Donald Trump.
