Hello Pop Candians!

Is that even a word?

Anyway, I'm taking over Whitney's blog this week (congrats Whitney!).

I've been writing about media and pop culture for 25 years. Some of you might know me from the many years I was a writer and editor for AOL's TV Squad (RIP). I've also written for Salon, Esquire, The Boston Herald, Playboy's "Smoking Jacket," Mcsweeneys.net, Paleo-Future, Cinematical, Slashfood, and many other publications and sites. In 2003 I released a book of essays and I run the online mag/blog Professor Barnhardt's Journal which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. I also publish a monthly print letter you can subscribe to called (cleverly enough) The Letter, and I've kept a blog since 1996, which in Internet terms means I'm "old." I'm a Gemini, I eat way too much pizza, and I was once an extra on an episode of Wings, where I got to meet Debbie Reynolds and Rip Taylor! (no confetti though, unfortunately)!

This isn't my first time writing for Pop Candy. Last year I wrote Five Songs about Tea. My interests revolve around television, advertising from the '40s, '50s, and '60s, typewriters and landline phones, supermarket food, vintage cookbooks, cocktail culture, and crime/noir novels and films (in addition to drinking a lot of the aforementioned tea), so expect a lot of posts about those subjects and many surprises too.

Anyway, let's get to it! I'm really excited to be a part of this and I hope you enjoy what I bring you this week. And if you don't, well, that's what comment sections are for!
