Suspect in custody as gunfire interrupts Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon

Competitors leave the starting line during the Synchrony Rock'n'Roll San Diego Marathon on Sunday.

A suspect is in custody after shots were fired Sunday in downtown San Diego, near the route of the city's annual Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.

The race course was shut down for over a half hour when shots apparently were fired from a parking structure. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, police responded and found the suspect, a woman, hiding underneath a parked car, holding a gun to her face.

"There is no longer a threat to the community. The scene is secure. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon has resumed," police said in a statement. Police later announced the gun the suspect was carrying was a pellet gun.

Some runners already had finished when the incident occurred. The rest of the field of around 4,900 racers were rerouted and directed to stay at San Diego City College for their safety.

Shortly before noon, officers said runners were cleared to resume their progress “towards the finish line and the post-race finish area where they were able to meet up with their family and friends,” the statement said. “We are incredibly grateful for the quick response and partnership with first responders as we worked together to keep our athletes safe.”
